This is an invitation for ALBA Members, Memphis Business Owners, Community Leaders, Neighborhood Association heads in the Airways-Lamar corridor (roughly within the boundaries of Shelby Drive, Getwell/Democrat, Elvis Presley Blvd, and Southern Ave.) to RSVP for the Airways Lamar Business Association luncheon meeting:

Greyhound/MATA Bus Terminal
(at the corner of Airways Blvd. and Brooks Rd.)

As part of the meeting, we will take a tour of the facility. We will also receive some updates about upcoming plans throughout the Airways-Lamar corridor. ALBA's Volunteer of the Year (Linda Cobbins); Business of the Year (Michael Goldstein); and Albert Crawford Award recipient (Willie Wilson) will be recognized during the meeting.

If you have not already done so, be sure to RSVP (via personal facebook message) as soon possible so we may have a count of members and guests. Feel free to invite some of your business partners/neighbors in the Airways-Lamar area to be a part. Again RSVP is required by Wed. Feb. 1, 5 p.m. (CST).

 


 
You are the community. With Airways Lamar Business Association you become a part of its mission to nurture the area’s coalition of businesses, industries, governments, neighborhoods and individuals for the beautification, education, safety, and development of the Airways-Lamar corrridor in the Memphis metropolitan region.

ALBA is Your Gateway to the City of Memphis and Around the Globe.


ALBA helps:
·         Encourage sustainable residential and business developments.
·         Support K-12, college, and skill-trade education.
·         Improve neighborhood safety.
·         Identify, develop and utilize the existing human capital.
·         Build awareness of economic opportunities.
·         Promote business and residential growth.



Last year was a very productive year, with more exciting things to come in 2011. This is the time to renew or begin your membership with the Airways Lamar Business Association. With your involvement ALBA will be able to have a significant impact in the area’s economic growth.

During 2010, ALBA was able to:

  • Coordinate community cleanups for beautification with more than 300 volunteers who collected tons of trash for proper disposal.
  • Finalize design plans for MATA/Greyhound Terminal development on Brooks Rd. (at Airways Blvd.)
  • Gain positive publicity for ALBA and the Airways-Lamar corridor via television, newspaper and radio programs.
  • Begin affiliation with vocational training for area residents.
  • Encourage fathers to be involved with their children’s education via Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students).
  • Enhance stronger relationships with businesses and neighborhood associations.
  • Help sponsor Bethel Grove Elementary School graduation banquet.
  • Continue the Integrity program for grade school students.
  • Sponsor a gifted neighborhood student for a distinguished leadership program that was held in Nashville, Tenn.
  • Partner in Parenting Symposiums in Glenview, Orange Mound and other communities.
  • Conduct monthly luncheon meetings with a variety of special guests.
  • Host the Orange Mound Heritage Festival to help promote community appreciation.
  • Participate in Memphis City Schools Think Show Days at elementary, middle and high schools.
  • Provide input in Aerotropolis planning and committee activities.
  • Be a part of green improvements on Plough Boulevard around airport area.
  • Relocate ALBA office to Memphis Depot
  • Have the 2nd Annual Wreath Ceremony for infant mortality awareness.
  • Get involved with Melrose High School by encouraging academic efforts where most of their athletes maintain a 3.0 GPA or better; actress Victoria Rowell spoke to a small group of 11th and 12th-grade students.
  • Work with local governments to help bring about area improvements.
  • Assist Memphis Little League implement the region’s only National Little League program with a home plate facility in the Airways-Lamar corridor (Charjean Park or some other open space that would promote sports, discipline and physical fitness activities in the Memphis community).

 

 

This year, ALBA is already working on:

  • A summer placement program that provides work/training for neighborhood teens.
  • Coordinating a massive community cleanup prior to Memphis hosting the World Airport Convention in April 2011. (Cleanup tentative date is Sat., March 26, 2011)
  • Improving safety on Democrat Rd. (at Nonconnah) by working with city officials to implement school zone resources where Southern Ave. Charter School has relocated its elementary program.
  • Master plan discussions with the Aerotropolis Project.
  • Future planning for neighborhood renovations and development.
  • A sustainable community plan to enhance area stability.
  • Continued discussion of Memphis Little League developments.
  • A wish list of items needed for area schools.
  • Library funding and a reading program to encourage student-parent participation.
  • Enhancing the Integrity program with added corporate and neighborhood participation.
  • Development of ALBA website and Gateway newsletter.

 

And there are more initiatives to come.
